The UN House hosted a session on "The Role of Legal Aid Service in Effective Legal Support for Persons with Disabilities" on April 21, 2026.
Levan Asatiani, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Rule of Law Project Manager, and Maia Nozadze, the Head of the Legal Aid Service (LAS) Information, Analytical, and International Relations Department, opened the meeting and emphasised the significance of inclusive justice, as well as the necessity of enhancing access to legal services for people with disabilities.
The event included a presentation of the Handbook on the Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, presented by Nana Gochiashvili, a lawyer for the rights of persons with disabilities. The presentation discussed practical approaches aimed at improving the quality and efficacy of legal aid for the disabled, as well as existing challenges and relevant recommendations.
The second half of the meeting was devoted to a discussion. The participants of the meeting, including lawyers from the Legal Aid Service, representatives of the disability community and human rights defenders of persons with disabilities, actively joined the talk. Their active participation led to a thorough discussion of the present issues, requirements, and next initiatives. The adaptation of services and the approaches tailored to the actual needs of people with disabilities received particular emphasis.
The event was implemented with the support of the United Nations Development Program UNDP Georgia and the Government of Germany.
