Presentation and discussion of UNDP research on Legal Aid in Plea Bargaining

Presentation and discussion of the research “Legal Aid in Plea Bargaining” prepared by an expert of EU-UN Joint Project Alex Tinsley was held on June 5, 2017 in Hotel Betsy.

The research overviews European experience and international standards related to participation of the defense counsel in plea bargaining, legal aid and reimbursement of costs of representation.

Participants of the roundtable discussed challenges related to legal aid in criminal justice and examined ways of their solution.

The roundtable was held in participation of representatives of Georgian Parliament, Judiciary, Prosecutors’ Office, Bar Association, Legal Aid Service, civil society NGOs and international organizations.

The event was held in the framework of the EU-UN joint program Enhancing Access to Justice and Development of a Child-friendly Justice System in Georgia” carried out with support of the European Union. The project is carried out on the basis of the agreement between Georgia and EU. Specific objectives of this project are to support access to justice through promoting more independent and effective legal profession, legal aid system and greater application of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms (ADRs), promote and support the establishment of an effective system of justice for children by dedicated regulatory framework and implementation mechanisms.
