With effort of the LAS Tbilisi Bureau lawyers, Maia Dadvani and Vladimir Gamrekelashvili, family from Egypt who was persecuted on the basis of their religion, could win the dispute against the Ministry of Refugees regarding granting the refugee status.
The Christian wife and husband, together with their 4 children, wanted to gain a refugee status in Georgia on the basis of the fact that rights of Christians are not protected in Egypt. According to them, the government is not able to restrain extremist groups who destroy churches and property of the Christian people. Clashes between various confessions often end up with killing of people. The Christians are often kidnapped with the aim to receive ransom.
While discussing the issue, the Ministry of Refugees of Georgia considered that danger which the asylum seekers’ family indicated on, was exaggerated. On the basis of the data from the Ministry, lately, situation of Christians in Egypt has been improved after the president Al Sisi came to the office. The incidents rare occur on religious basis and take place only at the certain territory.
The family from Egypt applied to free legal aid service and appealed the decision of the Ministry in the court. The LAS Tbilisi Bureau lawyers – Maia Dadvani and Vladimer Gamrekelashvili defended their interests.
Finally, Tbilisi City Court satisfied the lawsuit of the asylum seeker family, annulled decision of the Ministry regarding refusal of granting them a refugee status and obliged the Ministry to pass a new administrative legal act.
