Public Lawyers Attend Advanced Training on Refugee Legislation Issues

The LAS lawyers and consultants attended one-day training on refugee legislation issues carried out with support of UNHCR and UNAG. The training was led by the UNHCR and UNAG experts.

As a part of the training, the following issues have been discussed: race, religion, nationality, member of certain social group and political opinion – as a ground for prosecution; searching information about the country of origin of a refugee; return of a refugee to a safe region of the country of origin – as an alternative; international and national case law regarding protection of refugees.

This is the second training in turn regarding protection issues of refugees which was held for the public lawyers. The first training was held in January of this year, as soon as the legislative amendments were enacted, according to which an asylum seeker in Georgia has right to apply for free advocacy service if the court is examining the case of granting or suspending of shelter or humanitarian status.

From January to May, 80 asylum seekers addressed Legal Aid Service to receive free advocacy service.
